Castaneda, Carlos Cesar Arana

    0.04 sec.

Castaneda, Carlos Cesar Arana (1931-1998)

Brazilian-born US cultural anthropologist and author. He published The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge (1968), allegedly based on his five-year apprenticeship with a Yaqui Indian sorcerer. (The Yaqui live in northwestern Mexico and bordering US states.) Because Castaneda was so elusive, many doubted the authenticity of the book's contents.

He was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and educated at the University of California at Los Angeles, USA. His other popular books, including A Separate Reality (1971) and Tales of Power (1975), have raised questions as to how much of his work was true anthropology.
