Castelfranco Veneto

Town in Veneto region, northeast Italy, on the River Musone, 25 km/15 mi west of Treviso; population (1991) 29,500. Once an important fortress, it was the scene of an Austrian defeat by the French in 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars. There is a 12th-century castle and an 18th-century cathedral with an altarpiece by the Renaissance painter Giorgione, who was born here in about 1475.
