Castel Gandolfo

Village in Lazio, Italy, 24 km/15 mi southeast of Rome, situated on a volcanic slope 122 m/400 ft above Lake Albano; population (1990) 7,000. It was named after a castle which once stood on the site. There is a 17th-century palace, built by Pope Urban VIII, which is still used by the pope as a summer residence.

Castel Gandolfo is believed to have been built on the site of the ancient town of Alba Longa, traditionally founded by Ascanius, son of the Trojan prince Aeneas, after the fall of Troy. It was the legendary birthplace of Romulus and Remus, and centre of the Latin League, an ancient federation of cities.
