Castelli, Leo (born Krauss) (1907–1999)

Italian-born US art dealer. He specialized in avant-garde American paintings, sculptures, and graphics, and was an important force in 20th-century American art. From 1957 he was the director and owner of the Leo Castelli Gallery and Castelli Graphics.

Born in Trieste, Italy, he adopted his mother's maiden name (Castelli) in 1919. He graduated from the University of Milan, then emigrated to New York City. He studied at Columbia University 1941–43. His gallery exhibited works by modern masters Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns, and Castelli was famously the dealer responsible for selling the Campbell's soup can paintings of Andy Warhol.
