Castelo Branco

Capital of Castelo Branco district, and of Beira Baixa province, west-central Portugal; population (2001) 31,200. Castelo Branco has a wool industry and a trade in agricultural produce, cork, wine, and olive oil. There are Roman remains and the ruins of a castle of the Templars.
