WittenbergTown in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, on the River Elbe, southwest of Berlin; population (2005 est) 46,600. Wittenberg University was founded in 1502, but transferred to Halle in 1815. The town became the cradle of the Reformation in the early 16th century. The Protestant reformer Martin Luther preached in the Stadtkirche (in which he is buried), nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Schlosskirche in 1517, and taught Philosophy at the university. The artists Lucas Cranach, father and son, lived here.
