Castle Douglas

Market town and former burgh in Dumfries and Galloway unitary authority, Scotland, on Carlingwark Loch, 26 km/16 mi southwest of Dumfries; population (2001) 3,700. Marl, a valuable lime-based clay fertilizer dredged from the loch, was once the town's main source of income. Its principal trade is now in sheep and cattle.

The old village was redesigned in 1792 by Sir William Douglas, a local merchant.
