Castle Rising

Castle Rising

Village in Norfolk, England, 6 km/4 mi northeast of King's Lynn. There are the ruins of a large Norman castle here, built around 1150 by William de Albini, Earl of Sussex, and now managed by English Heritage. The keep is one of the largest in England. Isabella of France was exiled to Castle Rising following the murder of Edward II.

Castle Rising is also the site of the 12th-century church of St Lawrence, and of Bede House, founded by Henry Howard in 1614 for poor women. Today Bede House is an almshouse for elderly women, who wear Jacobean costume to attend church on Sundays.

And maybe knights, all flashing in the sun, would come riding around a bend in the road, or a lady on a milk-white mare, and in the distance I could see the towers of a castle rising, or I just knew, on the next turn, that I'd come upon some palace, all white and airy and fairy-like, with fountains playing, and flowers all over everything, and peacocks on the lawn.
