Castleblayney

Market town in County Monaghan, Republic of Ireland, close to the border with Northern Ireland, on the shores of Lough Muckno; population (2002) 1,700. The town is an urban district council. It is a centre for coarse fishing in Lough Muckno and there is a country park, Lough Muckno Leisure Park, nearby. The town is named after Edward Blayney, who was granted the land by James I.

The town was founded on the site of an early Christian church and the area was originally controlled by local Hanratty chieftains. Much of the modern town was built by the Blayney family, and the courthouse, market house, and Church of Ireland church was added in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
