Castlegar

City in Central Kootenay Regional District, southeast British Columbia, Canada, on the Columbia River, near the mouth of the Kootenay River, 399 km/248 mi east of Vancouver and 34 km/21 mi north of the Washington border; population (1991) 6,600. Castlegar is a trade centre in a lumbering and mining region.

It is noted for its Doukhobor Heritage Village, which commemorates the Russian sect's settlement here 1908–24.
