Castleton

Village in Derbyshire, England, 25 km/16 mi west of Sheffield; population (2001) 1,200. It is situated at the foot of a hill, on the summit of which stands Peak Castle, originally built by William Peveril on land granted to him by William the Conqueror in 1068. The keep was built by Henry II in 1176. Today the castle is managed by English Heritage.

Peak Castle features in Walter Scott's novel Peveril of the Peak. The area around the village contains the Peak, Speedwell, and Treak Cliff Caverns, as well as the Blue John Cavern, which is known for its coloured fluorspar.

Castleton

Town in Rutland County, west-central Vermont, USA, on Lake Bomoseen, 16 km/10 mi west of Rutland; population (1990) 4,300. Local industries produce slate, lumber, and fruit.

The town has fine examples of 19th-century architecture, and is home to Castleton State College, which began as a grammar school in 1787.
