Castletown House| Country house near Celbridge, County Kildare, Republic of Ireland. Begun in 1722, it is the first and greatest Palladian house in Ireland built to correct Classical proportions by a professional architect, and its design was a significant influence on later 18th-century works. Castletown was built for William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, to the designs of the Italian architect Alessandro Galilei. The hall was designed by Edward Lovett Pearce in 1724. Other notable features are the plasterwork (1759) on the staircase by the Lafranchini brothers, and the Long Room and unique surviving Print Room (about 1765). |
