Castres

French town in the département of Tarn, on the River Agout; population (1990) 47,000. Its main industries include textiles, metals, pottery, and mechanical and electrical goods. It grew up around a 7th-century Benedictine abbey. In the 16th century it was a Huguenot religious stronghold.
