Castro y Bellvis, Guillén de (1569–1631)

Spanish dramatist. He is chiefly remembered for Las mocedades del Cid (1618), a chronicle play based on the legend of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, ‘El Cid’; it is the source of the French playwright Corneille's masterpiece. Castro y Bellvis wrote about 40 plays, many of which deal with ethical problems of the aristocracy.

They include the historical plays Pagar en propuia moneda and La justitia en la piedad, both published in 1609.
