The catalpa tree is widely cultivated in the southern United States as an ornamental shade tree. The white tubular flowers, tinged with purple, are succeeded by long, beanlike pods.

Any of a group of trees belonging to the trumpet creeper family, found in North America, China, and the West Indies. The northern catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) of North America grows to 20 m/65 ft and has heart-shaped deciduous leaves and tubular white flowers with purple borders. (Genus Catalpa, family Bignoniaceae.)
