Catamarca

Province in northwest Argentina, in the foothills of the Andes and bordering Chile in the west; area 102,602 sq km/39,615 sq mi; population (1996) 264,602; capital Catamarca. The land here is mountainous and arid, with only a scrub vegetation, except in the valleys and basins, which are irrigated by streams and have fertile soil. Cattle and sheep are raised, and crops such as cotton, alfalfa, wheat, figs, and grapes are grown, but mainly on a subsistence basis. Copper, gold, silver, manganese, and tin are mined in significant quantities. There is some manufacturing industry, principally producing woollen goods.

The town of Catamarca is an old colonial town. It has a population of 89,000, and is known for its curative thermal springs and hand-woven ponchos.
