Catanduanes

Island province of the Philippines, situated to the east of Luzon Island, from which it is separated by the Maueda Channel; area 1,510 sq km/583 sq mi; population (1995) 203,000. The capital is Virac. Catanduanes is hilly with a fertile area around Virac. The main products are rice, cotton, coconuts, hemp, and timber; fishing is also carried out. There are deposits of coal, gold, silver, manganese, and copper, although mining is not developed to any great extent.

Cultivation is concentrated in the northeast. Catanduanes lies in the typhoon belt, and the landscape is bleak as a result.
