Catanzaro

Market town, capital of Catanzaro province, and of Calabria region, southern Italy; population (2001) 95,300. Built on a hill 120 km/75 mi northeast of Reggio di Calabria, Catanzaro commands an important gap south of the Sila mountains. The town was badly damaged during World War I. There is an archiepiscopal church and a museum.
