Catel, Charles Simon (1773-1830)

French composer. He was a pupil of Sacchini and Gossec in Paris, and after working as a teacher he became the chief musician, with Gossec, of the Garde Nationale, for which he wrote much military music, and accompanist at the Opéra in 1790. He was appointed professor of harmony at the Conservatory on its foundation in 1795, and published a treatise on the subject in 1802.
