From Views of Ancient Monuments, by English artist Frederick Catherwood. Catherwood accompanied US archaeologist John Lloyd Stephens on his exploration of Mayan remains in the early 1840s, and produced several volumes of drawings from his travels. Their publication provoked great popular and scholarly interest, as well as renewed study of earlier accounts of exploration of the Maya.

English topographical artist and archaeological illustrator who accompanied John Lloyd Stephens in his exploration of Central America 1839–40 and the Yucatán 1841–42. His engravings, published 1844, were the first accurate representation of Maya civilization in the West.
