Oxford MovementMovement that attempted to revive Catholic religion in the Church of England. Cardinal Newman dated the movement from Keble's sermon in Oxford in 1833. The Oxford Movement by the turn of the century had transformed the Anglican communion, and survives today as Anglo-Catholicism. How to thank TFD for its existence? | Not to resist James's attempts to foster a Catholic revival would have been madness. Diefendorf has nonetheless given dignity and plausibility to the religious practices of her subjects, and has solidly supported her contention that "The Catholic revival was the product of a vast collaboration between clerics and lay people, women and men. Taken together, they offer an illuminating analysis of the vigorous Catholic revival that took place in Britain during the early and middle years of the twentieth century--but which had largely failed by the end of it. |
