Catone in Utica

Opera by Leonardo Vinci (libretto by Pietro Metastasio), first produced at the Teatro delle Dame, Rome, Italy, on 19 January 1728. In the story, Marcia, daughter of Cato (ruler of Utica) secretly loves Caesar, but Cato wants her to marry Arbace. When Caesar's armies overrun the Uticans and Cato commits suicide, Marcia is sworn to hatred against Caesar.

There are also versions by Johann Hasse (Turin, 1731), Vivaldi (Verona, 1737), Johann Christian Bach (Naples, 1761), and Giovanni Paisiello (Naples, 1789).
