Catonsville

Town in Baltimore County, central Maryland, USA, immediately southwest of Baltimore; population (1990) 35,200. Catonsville is a primarily residential suburb, with some light industry; manufactures include electrical, chemical, and cotton products.

Founded by Quakers in the 1720s, the settlement was known as Johnnycake, after a local inn, until 1800. The Baltimore County Campus of the University of Maryland (1963) and a community college are here. Catonsville gained national recognition when a group of Vietnam War protesters, subsequently known as the ‘Catonsville Nine’, burned records of the local draft board in 1968.

In the old days, the Berrigans were front-page news, especially when they and seven associates were convicted after a vituperative trial in Catonsville, Maryland, of damaging draft board files by pouring blood over them, an action that served both as a metaphor for the war's victims and for the waning life force of a certain Lamb.
