Catron, John

Catron, John (c. 1786–1865)

Supreme Court justice. He was nominated to the US Supreme Court (1837–65) by President Jackson when the Court was enlarged from seven judges to nine. Known as a ‘Jacksonian jurist’, he argued vehemently for states rights.

He was probably born in Wythe County, Virginia. He was elected to an early Tennessee court from 1824–34.
