Cattaraugus County

Cattaraugus County

County in southwestern New York, USA, along the Pennsylvania border; area 3,383 sq km/1,306 sq mi; population (1990) 84,200. Its seat is Little Valley. The county is predominantly agricultural; there are oil wells in the south, which adjoins Pennsylvania's oilfields, as well as some industry, particularly in and around Olean, the biggest city.

Allegany State Park is in the south-central part of the county, south of the Allegheny River, which runs through the Allegany Indian Reservation. The Seneca Iroquois National Museum is in the city of Salamanca (population (1990) 6,600), in the centre of the reservation. The Cattaraugus (Seneca) Indian Reservation is in the northwestern part of the county, on Cattaraugus Creek.
