Caturla, Alejandro García (1906-1940)

Cuban composer. He studied at Havana and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He was much influenced by Afro-Cuban folk music. He was a lawyer, then later a judge, and was shot dead by a criminal.

Works

three Danzas cubanas, symphonic poem ‘Yamba-O’, La Rumba for orchestra; Bembé suite for 14 instruments, Primera Suite cubana for six wind instruments and piano, sonata and prelude for piano; songs.
