Cauca| Department in southwest Colombia; area 30,160 sq km/11,648 sq mi; population (1996) 1,127,678. The capital is Popayán, a former colonial city. Cauca is a rich cattle-raising and agricultural area, the main crops grown there being sugar cane, coffee, cacao, and cotton. The Cauca Patia and Caquetá rivers rise in this region. The department also includes the volcanoes of Sotaría and Puracé. |
Cauca| River in Colombia, which rises in the Andes and flows north to join the River Magdalena near Maganagué; length 970 km/603 mi. The Cauca is partly navigable for small craft on its lower and middle course. The river flows through rainforests and swamps in its lower course near its junction with the River Magdalena. The Cauca valley is especially fertile and beautiful. |
