Cauca

Department in southwest Colombia; area 30,160 sq km/11,648 sq mi; population (1996) 1,127,678. The capital is Popayán, a former colonial city. Cauca is a rich cattle-raising and agricultural area, the main crops grown there being sugar cane, coffee, cacao, and cotton. The Cauca Patia and Caquetá rivers rise in this region. The department also includes the volcanoes of Sotaría and Puracé.
