Caulfield, Patrick

    0.02 sec.

Caulfield, Patrick (1936–2005)

English painter and printmaker. His style is related to pop art, with strong flat colours enclosed within thick black outlines, while his subjects are traditional – typically, landscapes, still lifes, interiors. Deeply contrasting colour, hard lines, and no modelling create a characteristic printed effect, as in his Portrait of Juan Gris (1963) and Italian Girl (1968, Cardiff). Major works include interiors such as After Lunch (1975, Tate, London), and a series of household and office objects of the 1980s and 1990s, including Glass of Whisky (1987, Saatchi Collection, London).

Caulfield was born in London, and studied at Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He was influenced by the cubist painters Fernand Léger and Juan Gris. Public commissions include the London Life mural in Bristol (1983), and sets and costumes for the ballet Party Games (1984, Royal Opera House). He was awarded a CBE in 1996.
