Caus (or Caux), Solomon de (1576-1626)

French engineer. He was appointed mathematical tutor to the Prince of Wales in 1612. He entered the service of the elector Palatine in 1613, and laid out the gardens at Heidelberg Castle. He returned to France and became engineer and architect to the king in 1623. His books include Institution harmonique (1615) and Raisons des forces mouvantes avec diverses machines (1615), in which he describes the process of machine movement propelled by steam. Caus was born in Dieppe, France.
