Cavos, Catterino (1775-1840)

Italian composer. He assisted his father, who was conductor at the Teatro La Fenice, and later conducted at Padua and taught at Venice. In 1800 he went to Russia with Astaritta's opera company, and in 1803 became director of the Italian and Russian operas there, for which he had to write works in both languages, as well as sometimes in French. His Russian opera, Ivan Susanin, produced in 1815, was very successful. He conducted the premiere of Glinka's A Life for the Tsar in 1836.
