Cedar City

City in Iron County, southwestern Utah, USA, 29 km/18 mi north of the Zion National Park entrance; population (2000) 20,500. A tourist centre, it is headquarters for the Dixie National Forest. Cedar City has a number of coal mines in the vicinity. Lumber mills, brickworks, creameries, and bottling, canning, and meatpacking plants all also contribute to the local economy.

Lying in a ranching and farming area, it was settled in 1851 and soon became the site of the first iron refining furnace west of the Mississippi, which processed ore from several mines to the west.

Tourism has been important since the 1920s, with visitors drawn to local parks and forests and to the Utah Shakespearean Festival, held annually. Cedar City is the seat of Southern Utah State College (1897). The Cedar Breaks National Monument is 21 km/13 mi to the east.
