The city is an important road and rail junction. It is the centre of a rich agricultural region, and its industries include textiles, flour milling, and tanning. The city also has distilleries.

Celaya has several baroque churches designed by the architect Francisco de Tresguerras (1765–1833), who was born here. Celaya is known locally for its confectionery, particularly a caramel spread called cajeta.

When the Mexican War of Independence began in Guanajuato in 1810, Celaya was one of the main centres of conflict.
