Celibidache, Sergiu (1912–1996)

Romanian conductor. He studied musicology and conducting in Berlin 1939–45, becoming resident conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1948. In 1948 he shared the orchestra with Furtwängler on a tour of the USA. He was a guest conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra from 1977, and chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979. He also composed four symphonies and a Requiem. He joined the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, in 1985.
