Centre Party

German political party established in 1871 to protect Catholic interests. Although alienated by Chancellor Bismarck's Kulturkampf 1873–78, in the following years the Zentrum became an essential component in the government of imperial Germany. The party continued to play a part in the politics of Weimar Germany before being barred by Hitler in the summer of 1933.
