Civitavecchia

Ancient port in Lazio region, on the west coast of Italy, 64 km/40 mi northwest of Rome; population (1990) 51,200. Built by the Roman emperor Trajan, it is the main port of the region, and the nearest to Rome. Industries include fishing and the manufacture of cement, calcium carbide, aluminium, and foodstuffs.

Ferry services run to Sardinia. Civitavecchia has Roman and Etruscan remains, a 17th-century cathedral, and a citadel designed by Bramante and completed by Michelangelo. A nuclear power station stands nearby.
