Crespi, Giovanni Battista (1557–1633)

Italian painter, sculptor, and architect. He was one of the most important artistic figures of his day in Milan. He studied in Milan, Rome, and Venice, and from 1620 was director of the painting school in the Accademia Ambrosiana, Milan, instituted by Cardinal Borromeo. The baroque painter Guercino was his pupil.
