Cerro Largo

Department in northeast Uruguay, bordered by the Río Negro on the northwest, and Brazil on the east; area 13,648 sq km/5,269 sq mi; population (1996) 78,416. The capital of the department is Melo. Cattle and sheep raising, together with agricultural crops, form the economic base of this region. A railway runs from the Brazilian border through Melo to Montevideo.
