Certaldo

Town in Tuscany region, north-central Italy, in the Elsa valley, 30 km/19 mi southwest of Florence; population (1990) 16,100. There is a trade in wine, olive oil, and agricultural produce. The Italian writer and poet Giovanni Boccaccio lived and died here.

At a certain point of Filocolo's plot, when Florio takes the name of Filocolo (from Greek "philos" and "colon" = love's labor) for the journey, they reach a forest in Tuscany, not far from Pisa, called "cerreto" (oakgrove), from which the homologous place Certaldo, and therefore the identity of Giovanni of Certaldo alias Boccaccio.
The property here in Certaldo --about 40 minutes from Florence - is owned by Francesco Martini, a Sicilian who came north and settled here.
