Cerveteri

Village in Lazio region, west-central Italy, 30 km/19 mi northwest of Rome; population (1993 est) 17,800. Cerveteri is built on the site of the Etruscan city of Caere, and there is an Etruscan necropolis with rock-cut tombs. The old city was prosperous until the 13th century.
