Cesti, Antonio

    0.02 sec.

Cesti, (Pietro) Antonio (1623–1669)

Italian composer. His work includes church music and sacred cantatas, but it was as an opera composer that he became most famous, his 15 operas being produced in Venice, Lucca, Innsbruck, Florence, and Vienna. Il pomo d'oro, first performed in Vienna in 1667, is the most elaborately spectacular baroque opera known to musical history.

After serving as a choirboy at Arezzo he became a Minorite friar in 1637. He was a pupil of Giacomo Carissimi in Rome, and in 1645 was appointed maestro di cappella at Volterra Cathedral. In 1653, having previously become a priest, he entered the service of the court at Innsbruck and remained there, with a brief interval as a tenor in the papal chapel, for 13 years. From 1666 to 1669 he was vice-Kapellmeister in Vienna.
