Cetewayo, (Cetshwayo) (c. 1826-1884)

King of Zululand, South Africa, 1873-83, whose rule was threatened by British annexation of the Transvaal in 1877. Although he defeated the British at Isandhlwana in 1879, he was later that year defeated by them at Ulundi. Restored to his throne in 1883, he was then expelled by his subjects.
