Châteauroux

French town, capital of the département of Indre, on the River Indre; population (1999) 49,600. The town manufactures textiles, agricultural machinery, foodstuffs, and tobacco. Châteauroux is named after a 10th-century château built by Raoul of Deols. The present château was built in the 15th century. Situated close to the Loire valley, the town attracts tourists.
