Chadds Ford

Town in Birmingham Township (population (1990) 3,100), Delaware County, southeastern Pennsylvania, USA, on Brandywine Creek in the Brandywine Valley, 14 km/9 mi north-northwest of Wilmington, Delaware.

It was originally named Chad's Ford, after a crossing over the Brandywine, and was the scene of a battle (11 September 1777) in which George Washington was defeated by Sir William Howe. The restored site, including Washington's headquarters, is now Brandywine Battlefield Park. The Brandywine River Museum displays works by members of the Wyeth family, notably Andrew Wyeth, who was born here and painted many local subjects.
