Chaillu, Paul Belloni du (1835–1903)

French-born US explorer. In 1855 he began a four-year journey of exploration in West Africa, covering 8,000 miles on foot. His Explorations and Adventures in Equatorial Africa 1861 describes his discovery of gorillas in Gabon.

He brought back 2,000 stuffed birds and 1,000 stuffed animals from his 1855–59 African expedition.
