Chailly, Riccardo (1953- )

Italian conductor, son of Luciano Chailly. With Hans Werner Henze he founded the music school in Montepulciano.

He studied in Milan and Siena, became assistant conductor at La Scala in 1972, and in 1974 gave a performance of Madama Butterfly in Chicago, USA. In 1978 he conducted I Masnadieri at La Scala, Milan, and Don Pasquale at Covent Garden, London. He made his New York Metropolitan debut in 1982 with Les Contes d'Hoffmann and in the same year was appointed chief conductor of RIAS (West Berlin Radio Orchestra) and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1986 he was appointed director of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam. He received the Artist of the Year award in the 1998 Gramophone Awards.
