Cheyne-Stokes respiration

Cheyne-Stokes respiration

A cyclical pattern of respiration in which the breathing becomes slower, stops for some seconds and then speeds up before slowing again. It is associated with depression of the respiratory centre in the brain. It is seen in severe heart failure and particularly in patients in coma.

We stated this clearly to her doctors, and they raised her morphine level, in theory to ease the struggle of her Chain-Stokes breathing, but also knowing that it would depress her respiration and she would soon expire.
