Chalatenango

Department of northern El Salvador, near the frontier with Honduras; area 2,507 sq km/968 sq mi; population (1992) 180,600; capital Chalatenango. The region is mainly agricultural with livestock farms. The valleys produce most of the nation's wheat, and an annual agricultural fair is held here. There is some light industry.

Chalatenango

Town and administrative centre of Chalatenango department in northern El Salvador, situated 55 km/34 mi north of San Salvador; population (1994) 30,000. Founded in 1791 as an indigo production centre, it now serves as an army outpost. It has an important annual agricultural fair and some light industry.
