Chamaecyparis

Any of a genus of six hardy, evergreen coniferous trees closely related to and often included in the genus Cupressus in family Cupressaceae. They are chiefly found in North America and East Asia. All are valuable timber and ornamental trees. They have flat, fern-shaped, scale-like leaves.

Lawsons's Cypress C. lawsoniana can grow to 50 m/200 ft; it is very variable with over 250 distinctive cultivars. The Nootka cypress or yellow cedar C. nootkatensis, is native to Alaska and Vancouver. The Japanese cypresses Sawara C. pisifera and Hinoki C. obtusa have numerous cultivars, including dwarf, yellow-leaved, and blue-leaved forms.
