Chambersburg

Borough in southern Pennsylvania, USA, 72 km/45 mi southwest of Harrisburg; seat of Franklin County; population (1990) 16,600. A trading centre for fruit grown in the Cumberland Valley, it is also a centre of light manufacturing, including food processing, clothing, and machinery.

Chambersburg served as John Brown's headquarters while he was planning his raid on Harpers Ferry (1859). It was raided three times by Confederate troops and was the only Northern town to be burned in the Civil War (1864). It is the seat of Wilson College (1869).
